When you mention the word Calcium, most people automatically think of milk, cheese and yogurt. Calcium is one of the most important minerals that the body requires. It is vital for the formation and maintenance of bones as well as keeping our nerves and muscles healthy. It also helps our blood clot (in a good way) and keeps our heart functioning at the right levels.

Calcium carbonate is the most common form of calcium used in calcium-fortified foods and supplements. Calcium carbonate is the least expensive of all other calcium supplements. Calcium Carbonate is predominantly used in supplements and ant-acids such as Tums and Ronnie’s. Unfortunately this type of calcium is not easily absorbed by the body. It is better to consume calcium carbonate supplements with food so that it can be absorbed properly by the body. Calcium Carbonate is the main component of sea shells, snails and pearls.
Calcium citrate malate is a water-soluble calcium supplement. Calcium citrate has a unique versatility that makes it suitable to be used directly in food and beverages. Commonly used as a food additive and sometimes used for flavor. Most calcium enriched juices and foods contain calcium citrate. Its versatility makes it easily accessible in dietary forms and more cost efficient than calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate malate is the salt of citric acid and malic acid; hence it has a salty-sour taste. The form of calcium is very easily absorbed by the body. This form of calcium can be taken on an empty stomach and needs not be accompanied with food.
Calcium gluconate is a mineral supplement. This form of calcium is mostly used for the treatment of hypocalcaemia (low serum calcium in the blood). Calcium gluconate in gel form can also be used to treat hydrofluoric acid burns. Calcium gluconate is a salt of calcium and gluconic acid, and is most commonly administered to patients through a drip.
Calcium sulphate is a common industrial and laboratory chemical. It’s used as a coagulant agent in different foods such as tofu. Of all the different kinds of calcium, this one is the least likely to be consumed. Calcium sulphate is most commonly used in dry walling, plaster of Paris and black board chalk. So technically, this type of calcium mineral is used outside the body to repair broken bones, as opposed to the inside like the other different kinds of calcium.
Calcium is found in a number of sources. Milk and milk products to rock and limestone are a few examples of where calcium can be found. Each type of calcium can be used to aid the body in its own unique way.
